About Shirley
Shirley Desai is a writer, producer, and the creator of SPICE, a platform exploring how stories connect with audiences across cultures.
She is currently producing her first documentary and developing a slate of narrative projects, including coming-of-age stories and children’s fantasy adventures. Her work is rooted in a belief that culturally grounded stories can resonate far beyond their origins when they connect on a deeper emotional level.
As the co-founder of Sarvian Media, Shirley has begun building a portfolio of film and television projects. Most recently, she acquired the rights to Shiniwa, a powerful true story about a wealthy but troubled boy who finds healing among monks in a remote Asian mountain region.
Before transitioning into filmmaking, Shirley built her career in sales and marketing at Fortune 100 companies including FedEx and Intel. She later pursued entrepreneurial ventures in technology and construction management—experiences that continue to shape her strategic and creative approach to storytelling.
Shirley holds an MBA from the Kelley School of Business. Through both her creative work and SPICE, she is committed to supporting storytellers and creating space for stories that connect, travel, and bring audiences together.
Born in Canada and raised primarily in the United States, Shirley is the daughter of Indian immigrants. Her cultural perspective continues to influence her work and her interest in global storytelling.
About SPICE
SPICE stands for South Asian & Global Perspectives in Cinema & Entertainment.
It is a platform created by Shirley Desai to explore how stories are created, shared, and experienced across cultures.
SPICE was born from a simple observation: while there is an incredible amount of talent within the South Asian and global film community, it often feels fragmented. Creators are working in isolation, making it difficult to find collaborators, exchange ideas, and build meaningful relationships within the industry.
SPICE is Shirley’s effort to bring those worlds together.
Through thoughtful conversations with filmmakers, actors, writers, producers, and industry professionals, SPICE goes beyond traditional interviews. It explores not just what people create—but why their work connects, who it is for, and how stories resonate with audiences around the world.
At the same time, SPICE is designed to support the creators it features. By highlighting their work, perspectives, and journeys, the platform helps bring visibility to emerging and established voices—giving them a space to share their projects and reach new audiences.
While rooted in South Asian perspectives, SPICE is inherently global. The platform highlights voices from across the film and entertainment ecosystem, with a focus on understanding how culturally grounded stories can connect beyond borders.
At its core, SPICE is built on a simple idea:
The most powerful stories are those that connect deeply—and when they do, they can travel widely.
SPICE aims to create a space for open conversation, creative exchange, and meaningful connections—bringing together creators and thinkers who are shaping the future of global storytelling.
